Before crimping, hose is cut to length and, on some hoses, skived. We have two bench-top machines for this: the Hose Cutting Machine (up to and including 2″, 400 mm saw blade) and the Hose Skiving Machine (3/8″–1 1/4″, 6 dies). Tell us your hose diameter and we will say which you need.
What do hose cutting and skiving machines do?
The cutting machine separates hose to the length you want. Our cutting machine is bench-top and manual, cuts hoses up to and including 2″ and has a 400 mm saw blade. The skiving machine removes the outer layer so the fitting can seat; our skiving machine is bench-top, skives 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, 3/4″, 1″ and 1 1/4″ hoses and has 6 dies.

Neither replaces a hose press; they prepare the hose, and our hose crimping machines do the crimping.
Why is hose skived, and is every hose skived?
On multi-layer, spiral-wire high-pressure hoses the outer rubber layer is removed at the hose end so the fitting can grip; this is called skiving. On single or double wire-braid hoses many fitting types go on without skiving. The fitting maker’s crimp table states which hose is skived.

If the skived length does not suit the fitting, the crimp size will not hold; die selection and skive length go together.

Do the skiving dies on MT 30 replace these machines?
On MT 30, skiving dies for 3/8″–2″ hoses are standard on the press and no separate skiving machine is needed. The separate Hose Skiving Machine skives up to and including 1 1/4″. So for hoses above 1 1/4″ up to 2″ the MT 30 dies do the job.

Which hose standards need skiving?
The skiving need depends on the hose standard and fitting type: spiral-wire hoses such as 4SH and R15 generally need skiving, while on braided hoses such as 1SN and R1 it depends on the fitting type. Detail is in our Hose standards and crimping guide.
What should I prepare for a bench-top machine?
Both machines are bench-top, so they need a solid bench. For bench load capacity and layout, tell us your model and we will give you the details.
